PASTOR: Rev. Margie Paynton
Margie began her tenure at University Baptist Church as organist on August 1, 1976, while still a student at the University of Washington. She graduated with double Bachelor degrees, one in Organ Performance and the other in Music Education, holding a Washington state teaching certificate in Elementary Music Education. The UW Music School was where Margie met her husband Jim, and they were married in 1975. In 1983, Margie began a second career teaching elementary music while continuing her music ministry at UBC.
Over the 40+ years that Margie has been on staff at UBC, she has been privileged to work with a number of gifted and exceptional choir directors and pastors, developing a collegiality in the creation of worship experiences. As a member of her congregation, she served as Church Moderator in 2005 and in 2008 assumed the duties of Choir Director as well as Organist. The congregation that nurtured Margie since 1975 also called her to pastoral ministry. With their strong support, in 2009 she chose to pursue local ordination in the American Baptist Churches – USA and was ordained on June 27, 2010. She accepted her congregation’s call and was installed as Pastor on January 29, 2017.
Margie and her husband Jim both retired from their educational careers in June of 2015. Among other things, they enjoy spending time on their all mahogany 1940 Chris Craft. They are regularly joined by their children Mary and Matt, their spouses, and granddaughter Eliza.
